Commentary

Walker Evans launched his career as a photographer in 1928 when he purchased a Vest Pocket Kodak camera and turned its lens on New York City. Absorbing the lessons of Berenice Abbott, Charles Sheeler, and Paul Strand, he experimented from the outset with cropping, extreme close-ups, and dizzying viewpoints. In these photographs, Evans focuses on the formal qualities of a coiled rope: light, shadow, texture. And in his scenes of the Brooklyn Bridge, he focuses on the shapes created by the distinctive pattern of its cables and arches.
